Stephen Stanley is a wetland specialist with the WA State Department of Ecology. He received a BA in environmental studies and a BS in Aquatic Biology from UC Santa Barbara. He then spent 8 years with the California Coastal Commission where he participated in developing some of the first land use plans employing a watershed approach. Subsequently established Stanley & Associates which specialized in wetland restoration plans for estuarine and riverine systems and coastal resource protection plans in California. Over a five year period with the City of Everett, he guided the development of the Snohomish Wetland Integration Plan. This 12,000 acre landscape effort was designed to identify and prioritize wetland restoration sites and the least impacting development areas. For the past 7 years at the Department of Ecology, Mr. Stanley has assisted in the drafting of wetland assessment methods (Washington State Wetland Function Assessment Project - Columbia Basin) and landscape assessment tools designed to guide local governments in their shoreline (SMP) and comprehensive planning efforts (GMA). Additionally, Mr. Stanley has taught the Wetland Science and Ecological Processes course (Wetland Certificate Program) at the University of Washington.
